Jay Sekulow asks why Secret Service did not prevent meeting between Trump Jr. and the Russian lawyer
Jay Sekulow, President Trump’s personal attorney, questioned the Secret Service’s decision to allow people, more specifically Russians, in the Trump Tower for a meeting.
ABC News’ Jon Karl cited remarks made by Christopher Wray, President Trump’s candidate for the Director of the FBI, saying that the FBI should’ve been informed of the meeting.
Trump’s lawyer also inquired why the Secret Service did not stop the Russians from meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort.
‘The president has Secret Service protection at that point … raised a question with me,’ Sekulow stated, implying that the Russians who met with Trump’s officials have not been properly vetted.
Sekulow suggests that the reason the meeting between Trump Jr. and the Russian attorney garnered such notoriety is due to the Secret Service’s failure to prevent it from ever happening.
‘I wonder why the Secret Service, if this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in,’ said the lawyer on Sunday on ABC’s This Week. ‘The president has Secret Service protection at that point, and that raised a question with me.’
It is the Secret Service’s duty to secure a presidential nominee, not concern themselves with his or her campaign. Moreover, Sekulow pointed out that President Trump himself has found out only recently of the meeting’s occurrence.
‘Well, let me say this, you know, I don’t represent Donald Trump Jr, I represent the president and what I can tell you is the president was not aware of that meeting, did not attend that meeting,’ the attorney told ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl during the interview.
Sekulow also stood by what Donald Trump Jr told Sean Hannity on Tuesday night – that no other information on the meeting would come out.
Donald Trump Jr. recently told Fox’s Sean Hannity that no other information of the encounter will be uncovered, as it does not go further than that one meeting. Sekulov
‘This is everything. This is everything,’said Trump Jr.
But this turned out to be a lie as the Associated Press and NBC News confirmed on Friday that another unfamiliar person, a Russian-American lobbyist working for the Russian counterintelligence in the past, also attended the suspicious meeting.
‘And Donald Trump Jr was explicitly clear on this interview on the Sean Hannity broadcast that, that was it, on the meeting,’ Sekulow told the ABC anchor.
In addition to this, Sekulow said that the meeting by itself was not illegal.
